What I wanted was a cool way to display my favorite images, that would quickly and easily allow me to change out my old prints for new. Inspired by the metal print from ImageWizards, I came up with the above frames. They are simply 24 x 36"sheets of cold rolled steel with small magnets securing paper prints. Continue reading →

So it's Saturday morning, I'm laying on my belly in a pop-up blind on the shore of the St. Louis River, waiting for a family of otters to appear.

I'm motionless for nearly two hours when suddenly, I hear Katy Perry's "teenage Dream" from somewhere outside my blind. I realize Mont Du Lac ski area is just down river. They typically open at 9am on the weekends and apparently pump top 40 tunes to their outdoor PA system. Continue reading →

This year winter seems to be tip toeing through northern Minnesota. My snowblower still has a full tank of gas. My heating bill is only two figures, and the typical cold snap is lasting hours rather than days.

While this makes many smile, my camera and I are anxiously awaiting the inevitable big dump of snow. You see, last winter my friend Sparky Stensaas and I made some wonderful images from a quinzee photo blind. And without snow, I'm without a quinzhee. Continue reading →

A legandary race that pays tribute to a legendary man of the mid 1800's, and his travels along the North Shore of Lake Superior delivering the mail. The John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon is a race between Duluth, Minnesota and the Gunflint Trail. For nearly 400 miles the route traverses some of most rugged terrain in the mid west. Continue reading →

Spent a few hours this past weekend shooting fat tire bikes on the St. Louis River... Yah, you read that right, bikes on the river. Even though old man winter has brought little snow and relatively warm temps to Northern Minnesota, most of the inland lakes and rivers have several inches of ice. And with fat tires being the latest trend in mountain biking, we ventured out on the ice for some photos and a short ride. Continue reading →

Crex Meadows that is. Crex is a 30,000 acre wildlife management area outside of Granstburg, Wisconsin. Every fall it serves as a bed and breakfast for thousands of migrating Sandhill Cranes.

I spent a morning there last week, and hope to visit again tomorrow. Taken near the end of the breakfast fly out, this is a shot of one of the late risers. Although large and lanky in stature, they grace with which they fill the sky is simply stunning.

More to come... Continue reading →

Nothing like a little project to get the shutter clicking again. A couple weeks ago my friend Hansi Johnson suggested I contribute a print to the local cycling club's fundraiser. I've only a handful of cycling images I enjoy, but one in particular seemed appropriate for the cause. Problem was I loved the concept, but the execution was "ok" at best.

So there in lies my little project. I decided to re-shoot an image I had made a couple years prior in hopes of coming up with something to contribute to the silent auction. Continue reading →

We've all heard the claims that stabilization systems allow us to shoot 3-4 stops slower, and still prevent image blur from camera movement. Claims, that from my experience are largely true.

The questions I wanted to answer is whether tripod mounted super-telephotos also benefit from this amazing technology. Specifically the Canon 500mm f/4L IS, and the Nikon 500mm f/4G VR II, mounted on a Gitzo 1410 and a Wimberley Version II head. A Nikon D3 and a Canon 5D Mark II were used to capture the test images. Continue reading →

A couple of weeks ago I totally missed a northern lights display. On this blog I shared a stunning time lapse video by my friend Sparky Stensaas which he shot that night.
